128 WINTER CARDINAL
Northern Cardinal. Audubon Spring Creek Prairie, Eastern Nebraska. Cardinals can be found amidst snowy branches throughout the winter, looking for seeds and dried fruit or just gazing at the fallen snow. Their bright red plumage is a beautiful contrast to the white and grays of winter and their clear bright song continues throughout the year despite the rain or snow. Cardinals mate for life and the females will counter sing to the ringing songs of the male in a cheerful duet. They can be found everywhere from southern Canada through the eastern United States from Maine to Texas and south through Mexico to northern Guatemala and Belize. They thrive in the riparian woodlands of Audubon Spring Creek Prairie.
